A serious car accident on Highway 37 has left three people injured. The collision, which occurred on March 27, happened at about 4:00 p.m. about three miles north of Mineola, Texas. The road was blocked for some time after the wreck as investigators attempted to piece together the cause of the collision.
Authorities report that a truck headed northbound on Highway 37 was rear-ended by another vehicle traveling in the same direction. Emergency personnel arrived to find at least one victim pinned inside a vehicle. A driver of one vehicle was airlifted to a Tyler hospital, presumably with serious injuries. The other two victims were transported to medical facilities in Quitman, according to official reports. The current conditions of the victims remain unknown, and their identities have not yet been released to local news sources.
Rear-end accidents can produce a variety of dangerous injuries, including damage to the spinal cord. The quick “whiplash” motion associated with such accidents can cause symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to paralysis. Victims of rear-end collisions should seek medical attention to determine whether their spinal columns have sustained damage.
In this case, the driver who rear-ended the other vehicle is likely to be deemed at-fault for the collision; in fact, the rearmost driver in most instances will be blamed for back-end crashes. As a result, that person will probably be responsible for the financial damages associated with the collision. Not only will that driver be required to compensate the victims for property damage, perhaps through insurance, but he or she may also face civil personal injury suits in connection with the case.
The victims that were transported to the hospital may have sustained life-threatening injuries that require intensive care. Medical costs can quickly skyrocket after such traumatic accidents, leaving victims with massive medical bills. A civil judgment for the plaintiffs in this case could provide compensatory damages for medical costs, along with additional funds for intangible suffering. Victims in this case could seek financial redress for pain and suffering associated with the accident, especially if they endure sustained disability from spinal pain. They could also recover compensatory damages for emotional distress and disfigurement, depending on the severity of their injuries.
